Writers from Across the U.S.

Located in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, The Island Rat Residency provides writers with dedicated time and space to focus on their work—whether that means writing new poems, beginning a new chapter, constructing a manuscript, or revising an existing project.

Weekly residents arrive on Friday and depart the following Saturday. During their stay, writers are provided with housing for seven days, along with time to work independently and experience the island.

Ideal candidates are self-directed, curious, and open to the diverse cultures, landscapes, and communities of Hawaiʻi. Residents should be comfortable working independently while also embracing the restorative and creative possibilities of an island retreat.

Residents are responsible for their own travel to and from Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. We provide a well-stocked refrigerator and pantry items for the week’s meals. The residency is designed to give writers a quiet, comfortable place to live and work, with access to the unique environment of Honolulu.
